Pastor Ray’s Message – Break a Vase, Mark 13: 14:1-11
In the days leading to the cross, Mark tells the story of two people who took initiative – one out of extravagant devotion, the other out of selfish gain.
A woman enters the room quietly, carrying a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. She doesn’t just open it, she breaks it. The whole jar. No holding back. No saving some for later. In a single, stunning act, she pours everything out on Jesus. The fragrance fills the house. Her devotion is total, visible, and irreversible. Then comes Judas.
While the woman gives what she cannot recover, Judas goes out to gain what he cannot keep.
She breaks a jar; he breaks trust.
She offers her treasure; he offers betrayal.
She sees Jesus as worthy of everything. He sees Him as worth thirty pieces of silver.
Her extravagance is called a wonderful thing. His betrayal becomes infamous.
Both took initiative; both knew the same Jesus, yet they ended up in very different places.
Both had a choice; one led to honour, the other to shame.
