On Sunday 8th December, Pastor David Allan preached from Luke 2:22-35 .
One of the Jewish Messianic prophecies is found in Isaiah chapter 9. As an Israelite, this passage would have made the imagination run wild. Take a minute to read this portion shared below:
Isaiah 9:1b-2 & 6-7: “… but in the future he will honour Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan to the people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned…
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
With this passage in mind, and others like it, it would have taken the most spiritually astute persons to pick up on Jesus as the fulfilment of it when he arrived as a babe in Bethlehem. God so often works in ways that shatters our expectations. His ways are not our ways (Isa 55:8-9), which is why the story of Simeon in Luke 2 has a valuable lesson for us.
We must commune with God walking in the Spirit to pick up on God’s whispers and activities that are constantly happening around us. John in Revelation 2:17 puts it this way when speaking to the church, “17 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
So how are your spiritual ears? If we are not attuned to God’s activities we will miss out on his gracious invite to join Him in His kingdom activities as co-workers together with Him.
