The Trinity Mark 12:35 – 37 A Message Brought By Pastor Ray
On Sunday, we gained a little insight into the Doctrine of the Trinity in Mark 12:35-37. This is the doctrine that God is One Being, eternally existing as Three Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all equally God, who know and love one another.
While this definition may be easily memorised or stated, it is hard to get a grasp on it or explain it; this is because God is so unlike us.
J. I. Packer, in his book on theology, says, the historic doctrine of the Trinity confronts us with perhaps the most difficult thought the human mind has ever been asked to handle.
But while it may be difficult to grasp, the teaching of the New Testament is that the Trinity, that God is one God containing three persons is assumed everywhere. It’s the background of everything. And therefore, it’s always in the background of every text. It’s never in the foreground.
While we may struggle to comprehend the Trinity, we can better understand what the Trinity is all about as we observe how the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit act towards each other. Also, to understand what the Triune God is all about is to better understand what life is all about, because we believe that God patterned our life and world life after Himself.
I want to give you a bit of homework for this week for you to explore more about the Trinity.
So here it is:
Read the passage in Mark that we covered a week ago. The passage is Mark 12:28-31 and contains the story where Jesus was asked to identify what the most important commandment was
He responded that the first and greatest commandment was to love God, and that the second was like it, i.e. love others as yourself.
But the passage also gives us an insight into the kind of relationship that God has within the Trinity. Why – because He patterned life after Himself.
It shows the kind of love that exists in the Trinity and the kind of love He has towards us.
- So, what stands out for you?
- What do you learn about God?
- What do you need to do to be drawn further into the relationship that God has within the Trinity?
Spend some time praying this back to God.
I trust that God will speak to you and draw you closer as you meditate on His character and on the relationship within the Trinity.
